the application of modern numerical methods for the lay out and optimisation of various separator types like\u00a0cyclones<\/strong>. A typical application of these computation methods is the computer aided investigation of particle separation from gases in cyclones. The prediction of the separation efficiency allows the reliable optimisation of conventional cyclones and the development of completely novel\u00a0high efficiency cyclones<\/strong>. With that, very often expensive filter units, wet cleaner, or costly electro filters can be replaced or completed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When applying numerical methods (CFD simulations) to cyclones one encounters the problem of strong curvature of the stream lines because of the resulting strong swirl flow and the abrupt change of flow direction towards the outlet tube. This means that the assumption of isotropic turbulence is not useful anymore. Therefore, the selection of a suitable turbulence model is decisive for the quality of the calculated results. Even though one always focuses on the separation process the basic flow calculation is the fundamental base of the simulation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Comparison of the\u00a0cyclone flow velocity profiles<\/strong>\u00a0can show significant differences when applying different turbulence models. In a study we could demonstrate, that the so called Large-Eddy-Simulation (LES) is a very capable tool to simulate complex cyclone continuous phase flows. In a scientific investigation we found satisfying agreement between experimental data found in the literature and our simulation results. However, the well-known k-\u03b5 model and the RSM model did not deliver satisfying results.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Moreover, besides the conduction of\u00a0Large-Eddy-Simulations<\/strong>\u00a0our lab has excellent opportunities to offer flow simulation (CFD) in general and also to build and test prototypes of cyclones for model validation.<\/p>\n
